Fantastic question. The public schools here in Oklahoma actually do the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish every Tuesday and Spanish is everywhere.

How crazy are we?? 50 million Germans came to this country and there was no German for them everywhere they looked. These people became English speaking Americans and did whine all day about having to learn it. They wanted to be Americans.

There shouldn't be Spanish anywhere in this country. You know there are lots of French speaking folk on our Northern border, but we don't go out of way to make it easier for them in this country. Why do the Mexicans get a pass ...??? I don't understand it.

Learning another language is usally considered the sign of an educated person. It's a shame to see so many postings on this forum that think that Spanish is the sign of the takeover and the end of civilization as you know it.
In colleges around the US, people choose to learn different languages, including Spanish. Some say it is because it makes them better prepared for the job market, and when they say this they are not necessarily referring to wanting to move to Miami and be able to ask "you want fries with that" in Spanish. It's about competing internationally, not just about accomodating illegals.
Since Spanish is the language of most illegal immigrants, it's demonized, and people who demonize it don't see any advantage in learning it.
The US is not the only country with signs in two languages. In fact, you find multilingual signs in every major airport, train and bus station in Europe, as well as in banks. In Mexico, you find signs in English as well, and you also find people who speak English in every decent hotel. Language education is a huge source of employment for American teachers who travel abroad to places like China, Corea, Japan and Latin America, because there are people in this world who don't see learning a language as an affront to their country.
If that doesn't strike you as enough, there are literaly hundreds of Americans who travel to language schools in Guatemala, Costa Rica and, yes, even Mexico, to learn Spanish.

Yes, as Angela says, the illegals have taken over whole communities and they are becoming the majority. This is what is so wrong with illegal immigration. If amnesty is granted, votes will mean very little to Americans who have live and built their lives in their communities. It is vastly unfair to Americans who expect fair representation by a group of their peers in voting for what they want or need, to have our own government, change the political landscape (allowing illegal immigration) overnight with people who don't speak the language or have the same needs or desires and who are not here LEGALLY! It's time to rebel against this kind of corruption in our communities and government.
We have been frauded by our own government and if we don't reverse these vast wrongs, we to will end up like Mexico ...literally!

It's because America is expected to be "politically correct". which is a bunch of bullsh*t. I even heard a school in California that was primarily full of illegals tried to get away with flying the Mexican flag above the American. Then they complain about how "bad" Mexico is.

Actually, I think we do need to learn other languages. It doesn't necessarily have to be Spanish, but if you are talking about being lazy, why are we so lazy that we can't learn another language? People who speak more than one language do better in all their subjects at school. (I'm not talking about people who are not fluent in the mainstream language. They will struggle in all their subjects at school.)

However, I understand your point and I supported the English First movement back in the 90s. I have nothing against Spanish, but I also respect every other language group represented in the US. However, a country can't work unless everyone can understand the same language/languages. We have to choose at least one langauge that we will ALL learn, and it makes sense that that language be English before any other. After that, if a state, such as my state of Louisiana, wants to choose another language or two that everyone is expected to learn, then more power to them. Louisiana chose French back in the 60s. Our constitution says we are a bilingual state. Sadly, we are not. I wish we were.
